William Morris Gallery Acoustic Assessment

Lustre Consulting was engaged by Faithful+Gould and the London Borough of Waltham Forest to conduct a comprehensive architectural noise assessment to support the renovation and extension of the historic William Morris Gallery. This project required our team to assess the building’s acoustic performance after the removal of artefacts, providing critical baseline data to inform the updated layout. Our goal was to ensure that any new design elements were integrated with effective acoustic solutions to enhance the gallery’s environment.

We started with an initial noise assessment to gather baseline information, focusing on the acoustic performance of the existing structure. This assessment highlighted areas where improvements could be made, such as acoustic insulation and upgrades to existing door sets. We also considered potential impacts on the gallery’s audio-visual (AV) systems to ensure that the new layout met both visual and auditory requirements, which is essential in a public space designed to enhance visitor experience.

Following the construction phase, our team returned to conduct post-construction acoustic testing. This involved measuring noise levels from mechanical services, as well as assessing reverberation in the newly extended areas, refurbished rooms, and after the artefacts were reinstalled. These tests were crucial in identifying any exceedances in noise transmission and reverberation, allowing us to recommend specific mitigation measures to ensure compliance with the required standards.

The findings were compiled into a detailed acoustic test report, which outlined our observations, analysis, and recommendations. This report provided actionable insights, ensuring that the renovated William Morris Gallery would not only meet planning requirements but also offer an acoustically enhanced experience for visitors.
